Pétanque Competitions
Jeff Taylor shares his recent experience
Less experienced pétanque players enjoy two great advantages in entering as many competitions as possible early in their career. Firstly, I have found experienced players to be very generous in providing advice and encouragement to those who are just starting out. Secondly, there is far less pressure in terms of expectations. People are impressed if you can get all three boules within three feet of the jack and, furthermore, nobody expects you to hit an opponent’s boule if you have the nerve to play as shooter – they just admire your willingness to have a go.
When people learn how enthusiastic and willing you are you will also find other opportunities open to you. Early in October Ray and Tony found that their regular team members were not available to make up a triples team to play in an open event at Adur and they asked me if I’d like to join them. I said “yes” immediately before they had the chance to change their minds, but I must confess to being more than a little nervous about playing with such good players in the sort of tournament which attracts other toprate players within a considerable travelling distance of the venue. Club Moving Melee Doubles on 11th Oct
Sunday 11th October at Peace Statue Terrain (see page 6 of newsletter), this is one of the last chances to play in a club competition this year and the format is ideal for anyone new to the club or new to competitive play.
Registration strictly from 9.30 to 9.50am for a 10am start
Match fee: £4 per person – prizes for top 3 players
The players with the greatest number of wins over every round are the winners

BUT THREE !!! events you can participate in this Saturday
From 11am to approx 1pm - Week 1 of the “Beginners to Winners” Coaching & Induction course – this will cover
• Basic grip
• Choice of boules
• Pointing exercises
• Stance
All members welcome to attend, especially those newer members.
From 2pm to approx 4pm - “Pointing & Shooting Competition” - only £2 to enter -
Based on the EPA Skills Award it will comprise of 4 pointing and 4 shooting exercises: throwing the jack, pointing a boule, avoiding blocking boules, promoting a boule, shooting a target boule, shooting a middle boule, shooting a back boule and shooting the jack.
From 4.30 onwards…. Club BBQ –
All members (and their friends) are welcome to attend. Please bring your own food and drink. There will be a separate disposable BBQ for the vegetarians amongst us. ‘Lighting’ time is 4pm so BBQs should be ready for use about half an hour later. Read the rest of this entry »
